Warsaw Redux

I have never read, let alone written, a travel story about the period before the travel. The closest things to it would be those articles you find in newspapers and magazines containing tips on booking hotels, packing, avoiding jet lag (ha!)—all the practical aspects of trip preparation that sometimes enhance, but more often dampen, the pleasure of anticipation.

This story about my return to Warsaw in 2011, three decades after I lived and worked there, describes a city that Poles had been waiting for since the start of the Second World War in 1939. When the war and the Nazi occupation ended six years later, Warsaw, like the rest of the country, found itself part of the Soviet Bloc, a situation that lasted until 1989. It took a while, in newly democratic Poland, for the capital to come into its own, but Warsaw is accustomed to rebirths, just as its citizens are to waiting for them. I got a small taste of what they had been through when I was finally able to visit—after years of wanting to—an unusually meaningful institution.
